Bird Watching in the Delta del Llobregat

Looking for something different to do with the kids this weekend? The wetlands of the Delta del Llobregat harbour a good selection of bird species that congregate in two nature reserves, Remolar-Filipines and Ricarda-Ca L’Arana, separated, rather bizarrely, by Barcelona’s airport.

In the reedbeds hide little bitterns, purple and night herons, as well as several species of warblers, and on the lagoons you’re likely to see northern shovelers, shelducks, tufted ducks, great crested grebes, and many others. You’ll also see large numbers of lapwings, some grey herons, and maybe even a flamingo or two. Marsh harriers cruise over the parks, looking for easy prey.

Remolar-Filipines is probably the easier of the parks to access, and is only about 25 minutes from Sitges. Take the C-32 or C-31 toward Barcelona. If you’re taking the C-32, get off onto the C-31 in Castelldefels and follow it until you see signs for the park at a roundabout just before the airport. Parking is past the taxi depot and is marked.

There are a number of routes around the park, with bird watching hides overlooking the lagoons and estuary. While you’re there, be sure to take the short down to the beach, which is lovely. Have fun!
