As part of their topic on Evolution and Inheritance Biology, Year 6 have studied and made posters about Mary Anning, the famous amateur paleontologist from Lyme Regis, England, who collected and sold fossils in order to scrape out a living. (The tongue-twister “She sells sea shells by the seashore is about Mary Anning.)

If you’d like to learn more about Mary Anning and fossil collecting, have a look at Finding Fossils with Your Kids. It has some interesting biographical information about Mary, as well as tips for finding fossils for yourself. There are good fossil-hunting spots right here in Garraf – a good example is Olerdola, which also has a fascinating archaeological site.

Get out there with your kids and follow in the footsteps of Mary Anning!
