Year 5 and the Vikings

Year 5 have been finding out about life in Viking times! They have used different materials to create their very own longboats. The BBC website describes longboats (or longships) this way:
“The Vikings built fast ships for raiding and war. These ships were ‘dragon-ships’ or ‘longships’….Viking longships could sail in shallow water. So they could travel up rivers as well as across the sea. In a raid, a ship could be hauled up on a beach. The Vikings could jump out and start fighting, and then make a quick getaway if they were chased.”

Continuing the Viking theme, Year 5 put on a performance in Assembly entitled “Dr. Who and the Vikings,” which was a smashing success.
Noor and Alicia have written up a fantastic summary of the event:

Dr. Who and the Vikings

Dr. Who is a famous time traveller.

Dr. Who was played by Marti. He went in his time machine to get information about the Vikings.

There were 9 Narrators who explained who the Vikings were and how they lived.

Dr. Who ate oatcakes around a fire with the Vikings and saw an attack on the Christian monastery at Lindisfarne in 793. He also listened to the Norse myth of Thor´s Magical Hammer.

We all sang the song:
